When you’re planning a wedding on a budget, it’s easy to feel like you have to compromise—either you splurge on a venue and cut corners everywhere else, or you save on the venue and miss out on that timeless, elegant vibe you’ve been dreaming of. But here’s the truth: with the right space, like the Historic German House, you can have both.
That’s exactly what Kelsey and Ben pulled off. By choosing a gorgeous, all-inclusive Rochester venue that required minimal extras, they were able to save big while still hosting a wedding that felt classic, personal, and unforgettable. From simple, understated wedding decorations, to a curated vendor team, every choice was intentional—and the end result was a wedding that felt effortless in all the right ways.
The Historic German House:
A Hidden Gem for Rochester Weddings

If you’re planning a Rochester wedding on a budget, you’ve probably noticed that venue costs add up—fast. That’s why Kelsey and Ben’s venue choice of The Historic German House was such a smart move.
Built in 1908 and beautifully restored, the venue is an architectural gem that pairs historic grandeur with modern amenities. With peak-season rental starting at $5,995 (and off-peak rates as low as $3,995), couples can host up to 160 guests for a seated dinner in a space that already comes with Chiavari chairs, elegant tableware, a rehearsal slot, and day-of coordination included.
It’s timeless, it’s elegant, and most importantly—it doesn’t require a massive decorating budget to look stunning.

The Bridal Suite: Getting Ready in Style

One of the bride’s favorite parts of the day was starting her morning stress-free in the venue’s Highland Suite. Complete with lounge seating, vanities, and even a vintage-style Bluetooth speaker, it gave the bridal party a comfortable spot to relax and get ready without needing extra transportation.
This cut down on logistics (and costs!) while also giving the photographer—Anastasia’s Photography—plenty of beautiful, natural-light moments to capture.
Wedding Photos with Rochester Charm
Kelsey and Ben used iconic Rochester spots as a backdrop for timeless photos before the ceremony:
- Corn Hill neighborhood and the Genesee River provided charming city shots.
- The Sunken Garden near Highland Park gave them a lush, romantic setting to capture photos with their bridal party.
- Back at the venue, the balcony with vintage velvet theater seats made for the perfect dramatic portraits.
It was a mix of Rochester history, greenery, and city views—all close by to their downtown Rochester venue!

The Historic German House Wedding Ceremony: Simple Elegance
In keeping with their budget-savvy style, Kelsey and Ben went with a simple octagonal wedding arch decorated with floral swags. The flowers (including bouquets!) were designed by the bride’s sister and matron of honor, Jenna Corvelli—a personal touch that saved on floral costs while still looking professional.

Reception Details at the Historic German House That Made It Special
One of the biggest perks of The Historic German House? The space is already gorgeous. That meant the couple didn’t need to go overboard with décor.
Here’s how they kept it elegant, affordable, and personal:
- Tables: Octagonal wood table numbers, eucalyptus garlands, bud vases with lavender + white blooms, and votive candles.
- Family Tribute: Photos of parents’ and grandparents’ weddings displayed on the built-in bookshelf, alongside a sweet memorial for loved ones who couldn’t be there.
- Guestbook: A Polaroid wedding guestbook doubled as entertainment and keepsake.
Simple, thoughtful, and affordable.

Crowd-Pleasing & Affordable Food & Drink
For dinner, the couple worked with Julia K Caterers, choosing an incredible mouth-watering buffet (a great affordable wedding catering choice that still kept guests full and happy). The menu included:
- Chicken Bruschetta in pesto cream sauce
- Bistro filet with frizzled onions
- Root vegetable hash
- Pasta with pesto sauce
- Roasted broccoli with parmesan and breadcrumbs
To keep their wedding dessert affordable and crowd-pleasing, they served Cheesy Eddie’s mini cheesecakes, cupcakes, and bars—a Rochester classic. And, instead of splurging on a big wedding cake, they had a small cutting cake for the photo op and memory.
The bar featured a signature cocktail—Watermelon Sugar High—along with wine, beer, and spirits provided by the venue.

Dancing the Night Away (without a DJ)
Here’s a great reminder that you don’t need to hire a $5,000 DJ or live band to have an amazing dance floor. The couple had Jayce Grefrath play live music for the ceremony, then used a playlist for the rest of the night. And yes—the dance floor was still jam-packed!
