How to Make a DIY Christmas Tea Towel Using Heat Transfer Vinyl
These step-by-step instructions on how to make a DIY Christmas Tea Towel work for both Cricut and Cameo machine owners. For transparency, I own a Silhouette Cameo 5.
1. Upload & Size Your Design
Download the design file and upload it into Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio.
- Size your design to approximately:
6–8 inches wide x 8–12 inches tall
- This range works perfectly for standard flour sack towels.
2. Set Your Cut Settings
- Cricut: Use the Iron-On material setting
- Cameo: Use Heat Transfer Vinyl – Smooth
Recommended starting settings (always do a test cut):
- Blade Depth: 1–2
- Speed: 8
- Force: 6–10
3. Cut & Weed
- Place your HTV shiny carrier sheet DOWN on a StandardGrip mat
- Load the mat into your Cricut or Cameo
- Cut your design
- Carefully weed away the excess vinyl

4. Prep the Tea Towels
This step matters more than you think!
- Fully unfold the tea towel
- Iron on a cotton setting with steam to remove wrinkles
- Turn the iron down to the highest non-steam setting
- Fold the towel how it will be displayed. I folded mine in thirds lengthwise, then in half, like it’s hanging on a towel rod.
- If the surface still looks a little rough, give it another quick press. You want it as smooth as possible before applying the decal!

5. Apply the Vinyl
- Place your design carrier-sheet side up on the towel
- Cover with parchment paper
- Press firmly with your iron or heat press for about 10 seconds
- Move section by section until the entire design has been pressed
6. Peel & Reveal
- Gently test-peel a corner of the carrier sheet. If the vinyl lifts, press again with your iron for a few seconds
- Once adhered, peel the full sheet and reveal your design!
