Graduation party season is here, and what better way to celebrate than with a DIY photo backdrop that captures your grad’s big moment?
Store-bought decorations can add up fast—and let’s be honest, they’re not always that personal. That’s why I’m sharing my favorite simple graduation backdrop ideas anyone can make. Whether you’re planning a park pavilion grad party or transforming your backyard, these DIY backdrop ideas are easy, affordable, and totally party-ready.
Simple DIY Graduation Backdrop Ideas for Beginners
No time? No problem. These DIY graduation party backdrops are perfect for simple graduation party celebrations, or for:
- DIY beginners
- grad parties on tight budgets
- last-minute party preppers
1. Simple Fabric Backdrop
Want a no-nonsense DIY backdrop idea to dress up your graduation party? A simple cloth backdrop is easy to make for both indoor and outdoor celebrations.
All you need is:
- A large shower curtain (seriously!) Look for one that fits your space/frame:
- 72″ x 72″ (6′ W x 6′ H), 72″ x 84″ (6′ W x 7‘ H) 72″ x 96″ (6′ W x 8′ H)
- Sewn grommet holes (rather than metal). It’ll give you a more seamless look
- A cute banner that fits your theme
- Backdrop frame, either:
- a backdrop stand that fits your curtain
- or… you can make your own using PVC pipes
- or, you can use a tension rod for an indoor celebration
Grab the supplies to recreate this simple backdrop on my Amazon storefront.
Then assemble your backdrop, slipping your curtain along the top pole before securing, and add your banner. Done and done, simple as that!
2. Streamer Backdrop
This idea works especially well for indoor celebrations, or park grad parties where the pavilion has a backwall.
Create a simple DIY graduation party backdrop by layering:
- fringe backdrop panels (the above uses black, but you can sub in any color!)
- Star garlands (they come in gold or silver)
- a banner with a message that fits your look/feel
Shop these backdrop supplies on my Amazon storefront to recreate this backdrop.
3. Easy Balloon Wall Backdrop
Another simple DIY Graduation backdrop idea for an indoor celebration is a balloon wall. Skip the pricey balloon arches and go with an easy balloon backdrop using balloons in your grad’s favorite colors. Blow them up using an electric balloon pump (trust me… you’ll thank yourself later!), and adhere them to the wall using remoable sticky dots, or painter’s tape.
I’ve rounded up these balloon backdrop supplies, along with several balloon variety packs in popular high school colors, on my Amazon storefront to make recreating this easy!
Intermediate-Level DIY Graduation Backdrop Ideas
Ready to level up your DIY graduation party decorations? These intermediate backdrop ideas make a big statement without blowing your budget.
4. Garden Lattice Graduation Backdrop
Did you know a simple section of garden lattice (that you can find at Home Depot) can make a stunning backdrop for your graduation party?! You’ll just need to create a frame and base for it, and then add any decorations you’d like!
If you love the backdrop above, here are floral swags and dimensional letters to recreate this look!
5. DIY Hanging Flower Backdrop

For this DIY graduation backdrop idea, tie faux flowers or greenery onto twine and hang in rows from a simple backdrop stand. Romantic, timeless, and totally customizable!
Here’s what you need to create this!
- Faux florals in a few different colors (I love the options from Ling’s Moments!)
- Freestanding backdrop stand
6. Graduation Pallet Backdrop Ideas

This backdrop idea is perfect if you’re hosting a backyard graduation party at home. To create a grad party backdrop using old pallets, you’ll need to create a sturdy A-frame base, and braces to attach multiple pallets together.
I do recommend assembling this in the spot, or as close to the spot, as you plan to place it for your graduation party, so you’re not having to move it once assembled. It WILL be heavy.
Once you’ve got your base, add whatever decorations you’d like to it: balloons, a floral arrangement, or dimensional lettering are all great options.
7. DIY Fringe Balloon Backdrop
Want to create a backdrop that says “congrats, grad!” without spending a fortune? This DIY fringe balloon backdrop is festive, fun, and totally customizable for your grad’s school colors. It stands on its own (no wall hooks needed!) and makes the perfect photo-op for your graduate and their guests.
Find all the supplies you need for recreating this fun backdrop idea on my Amazon storefront!

8. Photo Backdrop
Make it personal by printing several photos of your grad throughout their school years and string them along a simple wooden freestanding frame. This DIY backdrop idea doubles as your memory display AND a cute photo opp for your grad and guests.
Need more photo memory ideas? I’ve got a whole section in my DIY graduation party decoration guide just for this!
Advanced DIY Graduation Backdrop Ideas (prior DIY experience a plus!)
OK, next, let’s get into some advanced DIY graduation backdrop ideas. These babies pack a PUNCH, but prior DIYing experience IS RECOMMENDED. Or… plenty of time!
9. DIY Greenery Graduation Photo Backdrop

Add a touch of natural beauty with a DIY greenery backdrop that creates a lush and inviting atmosphere for your graduation celebration. This photo backdrop looks like a million bucks, but in actuality, can be made for under a few hundred dollars (but, no one needs to know!). Get the tutorial from Cake and Confetti!
10. DIY Flower Wall Backdrop

Really want to make a statement at your grad’s party? This flower wall will do it. Though it’s undeniably the most labor-intensive of all of the DIY Graduation backdrop ideas, it’s got the biggest wow factor if you’ve got the time and energy. Find a great tutorial for making your own on Zamos Family Diaries.
11. 3D Graduation Year Display
OK… ONE more fun DIY graduation backdrop idea! Create a 3D floral graduation year numbers out of cardboard! You can make them super-sized for a photo backdrop, or smaller for more subtle decorations to accompany a gift table or memory table.
