Here’s a list of important questions to ask wedding venues before booking:
- What is the availability?
This might be an obvious one… but, just because it’s obvious, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be on your list so you don’t forget! - What is the guest capacity for the venue? Does it change based on layout?
Ensure the venue can accommodate your guest list comfortably for both seated meals and a dance floor. - Is there space for both the ceremony and reception on-site?
If you plan to hold both parts of your wedding on-site, confirm that there’s enough room to transition smoothly between events. - Does the venue’s capacity change based on layout (e.g., seated vs. standing)?
Some venues may have different capacities depending on whether it’s a sit-down dinner or cocktail-style reception. - What is the rental fee or package options?
Confirm what the venue’s rental fee is, or what packages are offered, if they provide all-inclusive options. - What’s included in the rental rate or package? Are customizations allowed?
Ask for details on catering, tables, chairs, linens, decor, and any other services provided. For a personal touch, make sure the venue allows flexibility in how the space is styled and what is served. - Is there nearby parking, and what is the capacity?
If parking is limited, you may need to arrange a shuttle or valet service. - Are there in-house vendors or do we need to bring our own?

However, with that freedom comes more responsibility to coordinate the details. To help ensure your day goes smoothly, here are additional questions to ask wedding venues that are more do-it-yourself blank slates:
- Are there any inclusions with the space?
Many DIY venues don’t include tables, chairs, or linens, so ask what (if anything) is provided. - Can you share example set-ups and seating capacities?
It’s important to visualize how many guests can comfortably fit and what layout options you’ll have. DIY venues can be harder to visualize. - What are the dimensions of the space?

Make sure there’s enough power for lights, sound systems, and catering equipment. - Are there ADA-compliant bathrooms on-site?
Accessibility is key for guests with mobility challenges and in some cases, this can be cause for concern with DIY venues. Also, ask if portable restrooms are required. - What are the temperature controls like?
Whether it’s summer or winter, ensure the venue can accommodate appropriate heating or cooling options. Especially with DIY venues, proper temperature controls aren’t always a given. - What is the policy for setup and teardown?
